The Gordon Family motto is “Bydand”. Which is supposed to derive from the words of a dying Chief, and which infers that one should always see things through, (Bide and’ win or, in other words, continue to complete your task). This is a motto I hold too.

However, my personal Motto, and one which ‘explains’ me more is “Dùthchas”. It is a Scots Gaelic word with no simple English translation. Nonetheless, it recognises a bond between the leader, those led and their joint environment, by placing a responsibility on the leader. A duty of care, of trustworthiness, of justice and ethical behaviour. It also infers a requirement of all, particularly the Clan Chief and leaders, to show integrity and moral responsibility.
